    ANDREW JACKSON DOLLAR

I got involved with coins a few years ago. I don't know a lot, but am learning a lot. I just came across a Jackson dollar that I'm not sure of. The hook of the J in Jackson has something on the bottom of it that looks like a cud. I thought cuds are usually inside letters. On the reverse, the RIC of Americe looks like it may have machine doubling. I looked at thousands of presidential dollars and haven't seen machine doubling on any of them yet. I tried to take pics, but they didn't come out good. Can anyone look at this coin and let me know if it's anything?
I don't know if this is the forum for this question. Are there any general pick up points for the presidential dollars for a good vs. weak strike? I'm sure each president has his own points. On the obverse I look at the word PRESIDENT. Most of the time a lot of the letters look very weak. On the reverse I look at the 1st curl behind Liberty's ear. Most of the time it is smooth. I look for the ones with curl detail. I've submitted coins to PCGS, but obviously I'm not looking at what they're looking at.
Sorry that this is so long.
    Thanks for any help, Nick

Hi Nick and welcome to this forum.

Okay, the first thing is the term "cud". This refers to a die break that happens along the rim of the die which is seen on the coin as a raised area along the rim. The term "cud" was applied to this die break since it seemed to resemble a chewed cud (?). If the die break appears in any other place, it is simply called a die break or die chip and nothing more.

Machine doubling on the dollar coin. I haven't seen that much either, however, machine doubling is a machine doubling and unless you find a collector for this type of anomaly, it generally has no premium attached.

As to weak, normal, or heavy strikes on a dollar coin. That is hard to determine, for die age must be taken into consideration as well. In other words, a weak strike well may be a worn die that has been repeatedly polished by the mint. This will decrese the sharpness of the design element, making it appear to be a weaker strike when in reality it is a normal strike.

I understand about a normal strike from a worn die. Am I correct in assuming that a normal strike from a worn die would get a lower grade, so as to treat it as a weak strike for the purpose of certifying? Some of the coins have coarse deep edge lettering. Does that affect the grade of the coin?

The one statement "eye appeal" that is used in grading coins covers a bunch of things and this is just one of them.

I saw Joe Rizdy today and showed him the coin. He said it doesn't have the characteristics of machine doubling but isn't sure what it is. Joe said I should post a picture so Mike Diamond can see it. I'm not getting very good pictures. I also believe coin in hand will be a much better view. Can I send this in for someone to look at. If so, please let me know where to send it.
