1954 Quarter Die Crack And? I Call it Reverse R 54 Known Error?

It seems more than one of these might have got through. Is this a documented error?

The obverse has a lot going on. The reverse might be PMD but I’m not convinced. The wear makes it difficult to be sure but my observation is the circular pattern appears to draw outward or was struck in. It isn’t like a whizzed coin as the marks are directional. This is an odd one!

    I call it a reversed R 54.

In my opinion, this is a highly worn coin. With the obverse side die cracks, this may have affected the strength of the strike. The reverse is difficult to assess due to cirulation wear. Once the coin hits circulation, its open season for what could have happened. On the PMD side, sould the obverse have affected the coin's travels in a coin counting machine or vending machine ? On the bonefide error side, did the obverse die cracks affect the quality/strength of the strike ? I do not believe its whizzing, its too deep and ugly. The reverse might have a slightly higher probability that is coin counter damage. But if it was spotted when this coin was UNC, it would have been plucked out of circulation quickly....

The area of concern is only on the center to west side of the coin. I dont have the time today to create a overlay that would attempt to line up the obverse die cracks with the reverse issues to see if they could be related.

I have not checked to see if this is listed on any CUD or die crack reference site.

Thank you. Yes, definitely a VERY worn coin. Unfortunately a lot of my finds are heavily worn. I would love to see a good example of this one!

What you may want to do is contact these folks. See if they have seen one before. If they have not, they might add it to their website.
