Flip-over double struck 1943-D Lincoln Cent

Hello once again fine people! It's been a long time since I've been around but, as you might have guessed from the title, I've got a doozy for you today! I picked this up yesterday not being sure what exactly happened to this coin. It was in an old Capital Plastic holder marked "Double-Die" (yes, I wanted to correct whoever was in charge of making that holder) but the glare / haze from trying to peer through the plastic only made for more questions than answers.

After I had gotten it home, disassembled the holder, and put it under the scope, I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Actually, I still kind of don't! But this is the flip-over double strike is the only thing that I can think of that fits the coin. Both obverse and reverse design elements on each side of the coin, with each of them right-side-up and left-to-right lettering. I had let my CACG membership lapse recently because I usually prefer raw coins, but now with this in hand I am just about to join another TPG (likely PCGS again) to get this whopper verified and graded.

This also has some unusual toning that I've not seen on steel pennies before, but only when reflecting the light on an angle. Otherwise, viewing straight-on looks like you would expect a steelie to look like. Did Capital Plastic holders tend to tone coins? So what are your thoughts on this coin? Is my guess as to the flip-over double strike correct? If not, I am very much open to hearing different opinions. Also, during my hiatus, I have been collecting a few other interesting coins, but I will share them at a later date. Thanks!

Oh, and I am not the guy on ebay selling a similar one. I saw there is a PCGS details - plated coin similar to this for sale there. This one is here and currently not for sale!

I was getting readings between 2.727 and 2.730 grams. The heater was running like mad here today (brrrr cold) so I couldn't get it to settle down to a single number. But several attempts of weighing at different times netted that result window.

Thats real close to the weight for the 43 steel cent.
Since this cent is not off center, one would have to confirm that what is seen on the coin can happen within the collar, meaning its probably a 1943D Lincoln Cent flip over, double struck, in collar.

Its possible to do an overlay, but with allcthats happening this week, I may not get to it. Its a new PC here, I need a lot of software added on the box. Add in some brutally cold weather pattern with potential for a foot of snow and some ice, along with other life distractions.

But from a distance, it looks like it may be authentic.

Your input is much appreciated! The concesus over on cointalk is that it's highly likely to be the real deal, too. I'm not really looking forward to the cost of getting this graded and authenticated with the proper attribution, but I suppose it's better to be sure than doubting it.

It's genuine and straight-graded! According to AI, this is one of 8 total population (PCGS graded) coins, and one of only four to straight grade (also PCGS graded).

The true view pictures show a completely flat, dull appearance, but that couldn't be more wrong. Indeed, this coin has that typical gun-metal gray look when viewed straight on with direct lighting, but when you reflect some light on an angle it really pops!

Regardless of the pictures, I'm happy to add this to my collection as a centerpiece of what's sure to be my most dramatic and fantastic mint error piece I'll likely ever own!

Yeah, same thoughts here! I'm still dumbfounded with the whole thing, too. I can't believe that this wasn't ever picked up and noticed before. But I'm extremely grateful to the shop owner for selling it to me, and I stopped by today to drop off some delicious food for him and his helper for lunch. It's the least I could do as a thank you gesture, but I still want to do something else for him. What exactly that is, I don't know yet. But he's been my go-to shop since I got into this wonderful community, so I'll see to it that he knows he's much appreciated!
