CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

    Missing letter part

Heres a fun one. The "E" in liberty is missing the center arm on this 1943 S Jefferson. I posted a typical sample and the MIA arm sample. Is this likely due to grease? (the B is also looks less than perfectly formed)

In my opinion, it looks like the 'BE" are both affected.
It could be a light strike through, maybe grease.
Die chips and grease can fill the letter cavities and result in some of the devices to not show correctly.

      1943-S, Grease filled die:
The affected photo is result of a “GREASE FILLED DIE”. As much grease that is used the mints - I’m surprised there aren’t more GFD coins. I have not tried to figure out how many zerts there are in use? Or barrels of grease that are used in a month? But, every piece of conveyor, every piece of machine no matter how small or large needs at least one. You do the math…Dave
