CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1948 P Franklin Half

I have a 1948 P Franklin Half that has something under the 'B' in LIBERTY, it may be nothing more than a die chip on it before striking by the die, but it is interesting nonetheless. It also has an eyebrow. IN GOD WE TRUST may also be doubled slightly to the right. Take a look and give me your opinions please.
    Thanks
    Jim

The anomaly under the B is the beginnings of a die chip. The curl =above the eyebrow appears to be damage that occurred outside the MINT. It looks like pushed metal from a dent in the coin beneath the curl and may be associated with the damage seen to the left.

IN GOD WE TRUST does have machine doubling, although at one point I almost convinced myself that I was seeing doubling conducive to a doubled die on the U of TRUST.

Thanks for such a prompt reply BJ. I feel sure you are right about the die chip under the B and the machine doubling, but under closer scrutiny the anomaly on the eyebrow does not appear to be dug/gouged out. The metal below, above and to the right and left of the anomaly does not change(even between the two lower anomalies) as it most certainly would being a post mint occurrence. I cannot photo it at an angle to be sure as it is holdered. Guess it will remain a mystery.
      Thanks again
      Jim

It is hard to guess what it is, especially since it is in a holder. And of course, pictured do not have the depth perception to make an adequate call in this case. It maybe just an odd shaped die crack.
