1958 one cent with die break and die chip

Searching some wheat cents with my son and we found this die break that I think turned out to be more by what I found on cuds-on-coins website. I was able to match up die marks on jacket but not the die chip on the reverse. I also believe this to be an advanced stage or end of life die break compared to the one on cuds website. Anyone have something or seen something like this? Input, opinions or help welcomed as I couldn't find an exact match. Should it be attributed?

In my opinion, its a die chip and a rather big one. Some others may come in this post and offer a more technical name, but it boils down to the same thing.

You might consider sending the Cuds on coins folks a photo of this and see if they have it or, will list it. Markers are good, but unless those markers are exact, this may be yet another die chip found. Worse case, they simply confirm the one it is. But, you might be right, it might just be an later die state.

As far as getting it examined, it depends on where you are planning on sending it. If you do it on the CONECA forum and pay a small fee, it can be looked at, examined and not slabbed.

If you decide to send it in to a third party grading service (TPG), it can get pricey. It really depends on the reason. The die chip in itself is probably not worth the cost of the authentication, examination and encalsulation fee. Thats the return on investment opinion from me. If its more about something that is a personal reason, and to protect and keep it from getting lost, that is a good reason. Is it the first better error that you and a family member found ? Can you send it in and the fees dont put your budget on a roller coaster ride ? I dont need answers to those questions, but they should be considered.

The CONECA forum rules frown on us taling value of coins. The coins that are circulated are worth less than an uncirculated coin.

I personally dont like to sway a person's decision on whether or not to send a coin in because its more than making money on a coin. But, the services being paid can get close to or exceed 100 bucks. Plus the owner has to assume the risks, cost and time its going to take to send this coin off to the TPG.

    Good luck on your decision.

I think I will look into reaching out to Cuds on coins and seeing what they recommend. I don’t plan on grading this one since it is circulated and the error is easy to see.

Thank you for the recommendation and informative response.
