    Mercury Dime 1942-D DDO-001 / Denver

The doubling is much more pronounced than the Mercury Dime 1942-D DDO-003 / Denver already attributed.

In my opinion, this coin was struck by a heavily worn working die. There is die deterioration all over this coin. If you look closely at VarietyVista's DDO-001, On the date there is a little doubling on the western side if the 19 of the date. Then there is some doubling on the stem of the 4.

The coin you offer looks shelf like and or smeared in some areas. Some of the photos show the die that struck your coin was heavily abraded with a lot of scratches. I see excessive metal moving toward the rim. Once these working dies get into the late die stages, the become loose and metal tends to escape. Older dies tend to move a little more and this can produce a lot of mechanical damage.

When I look at your example, I do not see the same pattern of doubling. One has to remember that those working dies which had more than one impression on them were made of steel. The example you have should look exactly as described in the attributors description and the related photos.
