1989 Cent with two flattened edges

I have been trying to figure out how this coin's edges got flattened. If it was post strike damage, wouldn't it be flattened on opposing edges? Could you shed some light on the cause of this damage? I carefully balanced it in the opening of a pair of pliers so you could see the edge detail.

It's definitely post-strike damage. It's not important to figure out exactly how it was done.

Is this a coin worth saving or is it basically junk?

Anything post mint as far as damage has a value of the denomination and that is about it.
