    1997 ASE doubling

    Hi Everyone,

I figured I would finally post this coin for your input. All outer devices show the strike doubling or MDD if you wish. The first picture is the one that I have a question about. The other pics are just for show-n-tell. The obverse die bounced in a CW direction leaving the rounded impression on the sun ray and the flat shelf like impression on the I of Liberty. What I'm wondering is where the ray and the letter "I" cross there is the section of raised metal which is a portion of the ray but it is the same height of the "I" and same width of the ray. Why is this portion of the design there? It should be the same height of the secondary image of the "I" and also what stopped the metal from flowing? the die detail continues to the tip of the sun ray. I thought possibly a die chip but this maintains the shape of that portion of the ray. I'll stop trying to explain what I'm asking and wait for questions or answers. Cool looking coin with this strength of strike doubling.

    Thanks so much,
    Lestrrr
