  • 1997 D discolored/lightweight dime

    Hi Everyone,

I need guidance on this one. I remember Mike saying in a past post that the weight tolerance is .2 grams. This 1997 D dime should weigh 2.7 grams but actually weights 2.3. The color of the coin is what catches your eye. It's hard to describe. It looks kind of like a dull gray dime that was laquered but there is no covering on it... so a dull shiny dime! The scan does not show the shine this coin has.
It has great detail and soft lamination lines running East/West. If it were missing the clad layer then wouldn't it show copper? There is the copper showing on the edge like normal.
The other option would be a circulated proof which falls within the weight range but it doesn't look like a proof coin.

    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Lestrrr

First of all, a normal dime weighs 2.28 grams, so there is nothing abnormal about the weight of your specimen. As for the dull appearance and streaks, I have seen this before. It appears to be a genuine mint phenomenon, but I haven't figured it out. The streaks might be roller marks. If so, they would presumably be unrelated to the dull, gray color which would represent some form of mint discoloration.

      Hi Mike,

Thank you for responding. I goofed on my weights when I typed them in. The Red Book 2008 says the dime is 2.27 grams but that doesn't matter...2.28 grams it is then. Am I correct about the tolerance levels of the mint? It's fine if it's within .02 or .03 grams. This is .05 lighter but like you said it's a normal coin.
What percentage + or - should I start thinking mint error? I don't want to waste your or anyone elses time with common coins.

      Thanks again,
      Lestrrr

I'm not sure what the official tolerances are. I would think any dime between 2.2 and 2.4 grams is close enough to normal to be ignored.
