CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

  • Late stage capped die?

I posted this on the LCR forums and no disagreed with the conclusions by ANACS regarding the type of error (a late stage capped die), however I figured I would post it here to get the collective opinion(s) from the error experts at CONECA ...

I'm newer to errors and even newer at the diagnosis of such errors.

The correct terminology would be "struck with a late stage die cap" as it says on the label. The term "late stage capped die" would refer to the die itself being capped and a "late stage die cap" would refer to the object that struck your coin. Your coin also appears to be a broad strike (struck outside the collar) which is not mentioned on the label. It is possible to have an in collar struck through a die cap, so your coin is actually two errors in one.

      Good point.
I should have proof read my post and thought about what I wrote.

I had no idea that it was also struck outside the collar. Thanks for pointing all of that out.

It's a broadstrike with a late-stage brockage. The cap hadn't quite progressed to being a late-stage cap. A late-stage cap will have no image on the reverse (working) face. The coins that it strikes will therefore show no brockage and will show a strong, raised ghost image of the obverse design. The ghost image on your specimen is quite weak. That indicates the floor of the cap was still reasonably thick. The floor of a late-stage die cap is quite thin.
