2006 D die plating error?

Hello everyone,

Here's a 2006 D dime that has 2 indents at the base of the bust with the die cracks on the bust. Die cracks can lead to die chips/breaks which would show as a raised feature on the struck coin but these are indented. Would this be caused by the plating on the die chipping away but not falling off yet? I guess in a sense it could be called a retained die chip. Any thoughts?

Edit: I just checked one of my reference books and this looks to be struck by a "laminated die"

I've seen a similar effect on the right and left sides of Monticello in recent nickels. It appears to be an odd form of die deformation that is commonly associated with die cracks.
