72 P DDO question
A few months back, I came across a 1972 cent with distorted letters. I sent it to Dr Wiles who identified it as a broadstrike with DDO-003. I just found another 72 with similar, but not exact distortion, but this one is almost 20 % off struck. I see doubling on the date and We Trust, but Liberty is not all there to see. I do not see the die chip that is on MMD, but it may be there with distortion. Is it possible to have an off struck double die ? Is off struck in the same family of errors as a broad strike? I am just learning, and appreciate any input. Thank you, KurtTags: None

It's certainly possible to have an off-center strike with a doubled die. The two defects are totally independent of each other, so there is no barrier to co-occurrence.
A broadstrike is a coin struck out-of-collar with all of the design present. An off-center strike is also struck out-of-collar, but some of the design is cut off at one pole.Mike Diamond. Error coin writer and researcher.

Thanks for the interest Brad. I have 4 of these out with Dr. Wiles right now. I do not have the equipment to photograph them, at least so they would be recognizable. If they come back as DDOs, I will take them in for photos and post them for you. I am just getting into the error aspect of collecting and have not invested a lot of $s until I am sure if what I am doing. Just learning the basics of the hobby are confusing to me, and I would like to get that part down first. Thanks again, Kurt

If you have a digital camera and a loop (the type that you simply place on a flat surface), you have the equipment.
Set the camera on macro (usually a flower symbol) and hold the lens flush to the loop. Leave the flash on (the outside of the loop will take care of the glare)
Hope this helps
