CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Kennedy half no date

    This coin weighs 10.4 gms. It has the thickness of a quarter. Is it the right weight to be a half struck on quarter stock?

    The absence of a date is puzzling and troubling. Half dollars struck on rolled-thin stock always show a date. The only known date for Cu-Ni clad half dollars struck on quarter stock is 1971-D.

        It's fairly close. A half dollar struck on silver quarter stock should weigh around 9.95 grams. But again, the absence of a date suggests someone messed with it. How about a photo?

                It looks like the surface on both faces was abraded in some fashion. Either that, or the coin was a "pocket piece" that someone carried around with them and constantly manipulated. The central part of the design on the reverse face looks unnaturally flat and devoid of the tumbling marks you'd expect of a genuine weak strike, whether that weakness was due to a low-pressure strike or a thin planchet. Furthermore, I see clear reeding on the edge, which is incompatible with a strike this weak.
