CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

The PUP would be at 3:00 on the rim, it looks like it was struck during the minting process. The 8 in 1978 is also distorted and the D which I'm sure is part of mechanical doubling in fact I would think the rim would be a signature of the mechanical doubling. What do you think?

The flattening of the rim opposite the clip is normal. It's called the Blakesley effect and results from a failure of this part of the planchet to be upset. The distortions seen in the last digit of the date may be machine doubling. I'm not really sure.

Thanks. I have heard of the Blaksley effect but didn't know this was a part of it. The 8 has a little damage on the left side but the right side looks distorted, The mint mark does of some machine doubling. Thanks again for the quick response.
