  • Weak hubbing???????????? 2001 cent

    Found in roll search.
The obverse shows only partial elements which are the high points. The surounding fields are flat with normal planchet lines running from 2 to 8 oclock
    The date is barely visible.
I've rulled out die mud and also a cap issue.
It apears to me that this was a weak hubbing as the planchet surface is still evident. Yet a first glance you would think it was a filled die, but the surface again is flat and planchet likeshowing the qualities of a normal planchet surface.
The reverse is a solid strike.
Another aspect is that the rim is crisp and full both sides.

The coin was struck through "grease". As is typical of zinc cent "grease strikes", the lubricant was smooth and somewhat viscous. Lacking any texture of its own, it preserved the original texture of the unstruck planchet.
