INDIAN NICKEL DATE WORN COPPER COLOR

Just to add to Mike's post.
The metal that this coin is made from is 75 % copper and 25 % nickel. I have seen it many times, even in the clad coins, where exposure to the elements has caused the copper color (due to the copper contents) to be more predominant on the surface of the coin.
It maybe a case where the exposure has caused the nickel (the metal) to deteriorate, leaving the copper atoms more abundant at the surface of the coin, but that is postulation on my part.
