CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

That is a great trail die. It is 1998P-1DER-029T and is considered a major die. This is the link to the page that this die is found on.

          Yes!

And I had just about given up on the error thang...! I'found 10 smooth edge Washingtons, a dropped letter Polk, a skipped letter Polk and several very minor errors but I think this one is my most up-lifting finds thus far. It looks like above a ms-63 does this warrant slabbing?

Well I sent the coin to NGC to be slabbed through my coin dealer and apparently he either forgot to check the variety box or he checked the error box instead. I got the coin back today in a slab (graded ms-65 rd) but they did not label the slab because of his error.I was charged full price by NGC as an error coin with a notation that it was a variety not an error. Along with the coin I sent them the Trails number for that coin saving them having to search for it.
I will never use that service again.

The two companies that do encapsulate trail dies are ICG and ANACS and they will use the trail die numbering system. I will not make any comments concerning the "other" grading services.

Are you sure that NGC will even recognize this variety?

I saw your email about your recent submission to NGC and wanted to follow up with you. NGC maintains a list of varieties that we recognize on our website under the Research tab. When determining which varieties to recognize we look to see not only how prominent the variety is, but also how widely it is collected. For a recently discovered variety with only a handful known examples there would be very few collectors. The 1998 cent with die trails is also considered minor by NGC, so even if it had been submitted for variety attribution it would not recognized

This is a letter I got back from NGC. I did not mention that I also sent a Polk dollar I found with a dropped letter on the edge. It was only the second dropped letter found on the Presidential series and they deemed it too minor a error to label even though an article was done on it by Ken Potter in Numismatic News July 27 2010. I'm soooo confused!

Thanks BJ. The question I have is should I remove the coins from the slab before I send them to one of the services? I'm thinking I should but just wanted to check with someone who has knowledge about the issue.
