1997 WASHINGTON QUARTER "ERRANT LEAF" ABOVE ARROW HEADS REVERSE

Here is a photo of a 1997-P Washington quarter with what "appears" to be an errant verticle leaf above the arrow head bundle on the reverse devices. I originally called it an errant leaf because it resembles a slightly smaller version of the leaves below the arrow bundle, only in a verticle position.

This is a fairly common occurance, in that I have 17 quarters (so far) with the same error. The quarters are from 1995 to 1998 with 1996 and 1997 being the most frequent occurring.

After studying this anomoly for a while I have come to the conclusion that this is a reoccurring die clash of the eye, nose recessed area of Washington's face on the bust. since I do not have a transparent overlay to confirm the die clash, I am still open for suggestions.

Merlin you are right , this is a common type die clash . They are fairley easy to find on a lot of different date quarters. These coins usually also have a few more clash marks near the bottom part of the eagle.
