Indent
First let me say that my gut tells me that this is pmd but a few questions need to be asked. The "gouge" has a relativity smooth surface with the exception of a dent that I think occurred later. There are minor scrapes but under my microscope they don't seem to be deep. The main question is why the gouge runs under the "E" without the letter being disturbed. The conclusion I would draw would be that the gouge occurred on the planchet before being stamped in collar by the die. The coin is slightly lighter weighing 3 grams. Again I think it is pmd but trying to further my education I need expert opinions. Thanks in advance.Tags: None

The foreign object only needed to be on the planchet just before the strike - it could have fallen in, been stuck to the planchet or stuck to the die briefly - as to which it probably cannot be determined but I would guess it fell in with the planchet.Jason Cuvelier
