  • Double Struck Penny?? Error?

Any advice would be helpful. This penny has been in my family for 40 years now. It's been in an attic this entire time and I don't have any real coin knowledge.

One user in the Coin Talk Forum said it was

"a genuine in-collar double strike with significant rotation between strikes." ~ mikediamond

    Thank you!

It sure looks like what Mike Diamond described, as the recessed areas of the die in the second strike correspond with the areas where detail remain in the initial strike. I and fairly certain the detail of the overstrike is not incuse, meaning that this is not a simple impression made from a second coin. Mike Diamond is a pretty reliable source, and I agree with his opinion on this coin. A very cool coin, and although I don't know exactly how much of a premium it would get, it sure is a pretty penny.

As others told you over on CoinTalk your coin is a double-struck cent.

      Nice find.
