CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

1932-D Washington Quarter D/D ?

    1932-D Washington Quarter D/D ?

    Thought the mintmark looked fake and brought it to a certified NGC dealer to verify. He showed me 2 coins (out of about 2 dozen 1932-Ds) with the same repunched D, one in an ANACS holder and the other one PCGS.
    I did some research and never found a variety or error on this coin. Anyone with any info on this and how rare this is on a coin that is relatively scarce to begin with ?

    Its not a D/D but rather a bit of "machine doubling" type of look. I'm not sure off the top of my head what the term is that this is called but it isn't an RPM.

    This also is something that some people use to make sure a 32-D is real. I have returned a few 32-D's because of this funny look to the mintmark because I think they are harder to sell because people wonder if they are fake...that is if they don't know about it already.

    I'll go look in my books and try to find out the term that I've heard it called before.

      The bad news is that this is not an RPM, but rather a classic example of machine damage doubling. The good news is that this is one coin where having MDD is a plus in helping authentication. The 1932-D quarter was heavily counterfieted. The MDD is a good indicator that this is an original.

        Ah....thanks James.
        What I had heard one guy say was that it was die damage. I guess pretty much the same thing he just called it alittle different.

          Thanks for the info !!
          I knew you guys know your errors.
          This coin actually fooled a lot of people, including some shop owners I visited after receiving the coin. Most people called it a counterfeit and an altered mint mark.
