  • 1971-D half dollar question...

I have a question regarding the bottom parts of the "D" and "O" of "DOLLAR". I know they have machine doubling but wanted to know why the bottom parts of these letters look to be missing some metal. Is it due to die deterioration? I put arrows pointing to the areas in question. Thanks.

I can see what you are referring to. However, I have not seen this type of missing metal before. Hopefully Mike D. will chime in on this one.

I would think this is also a manifestation of machine doubling. The notch in each letter would presumably be caused by movement of the raised post in the die face that corresponds to the hollow center of the D and O.

Here is a better picture of the coin, don't know if it will help any...do you see any point in sending it in for attribution or to have it looked at more closely?

Not really. If Mike feels that it is a manifestation of machine doubling, them it is just that.
