CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    Odd 1983-P Lincoln Penny

    Here is an odd 1983-P Lincoln Penny. It has a Horse Yoke zinc gasline around Lincon's head. I know it is tempting to call it a noose or "Hanging Lincoln" but I'll pass on that.

    That is odd. Ruptured copper plating does add comic relief to some coins.

      This looks like something dried up on this coin. scratch it a little and it may come off

          well why is it black ? looks like some of this black stuff has already been removed in front of Lincoln's nose and his head. if it is a gas bubble then what ever the black stuff is probably caused the zinc to rot under the copper.I hate these darn copper plated cents , they look so yucky when the zinc rots .

            Under Nose

            There is a slight carbon spot developing under the nose and there is a round spot above the ear that is actually part of the gas line that goes into the head at approximately the middle part of the ear horizontally that is cracked open in the curls of the back of the head and goes to the round spot above the ear. This coin has not been cleaned or modified in any way by me.

            I do "wash" coins occasionally using Dawn and a rotating soft brush (to possibly remove gunk or sticky material on the coin), but not this one since it has open cracks on the surface.

            But "scratching" a coin to remove anything is not a good idea. I hate scratches that have been done to coins, it ruins the coin. Even the "washing" I do does not happen on proof coins I have and such so as not to add hairlines to the fields. On older coins and circulated coins is it a minimal issue so I do "wash" some of those as needed.

            I have no knowledge of how one would remove a carbon spot (if that is possible without "cleaning" the coin. I guess one could resort to PCGS or NGC "restoring" a coin (i.e. cleaning under sanction of the grading company). See, if you pay a grading company to "restore" a coin it is not judged to be "cleaned" which I say is ridiculous. "Cleaning" is "cleaning" no matter who does it. And what would happen if you have a coin "conserved" by one company and then crack it out of the slab to have it re-graded, would it then become a cleaned coin by the other grading company????
