    1945 WLH - No AW

I recently purchased a 1945 WLH that did not appear to have the AW initials on the reverse. Upon receiving the coin I notice a VERY light marking of the AW (mainly W).

It's so light I can't see it except under my 20x Loupe, under bright LED lighting, and tilted at just the right angle.

On the dies missing the AW, was the AW just polished off? Forgotten? What happened? I've never seen initials this light except on REALLY worn coins. I'd grade this one a low end AU (50?) as it has some very minor wear but retains a lot of luster. I don't see any obvious polishing lines to try and hide the AW either.

    Thank you!

You may have a clogged (harden grease and gunk) design element (designer's initials).

The designer's initials are missing that is for sure and I suspect that they were filled with gunk when they struck this coin.

Designer's initials in this issue are incuse on the coin and therefore raised on the die face. Missing initials would therefore be due to intentional die abrasion.

AH, you are right Mike. The designer's initials were raised on the die.
