CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Nothing Straight Forward

Nothing is straight forward these days. Here is a 1983-P Lincoln penny that should obviously be around 2.50 grams copper coated zinc. However, this 1983 weighs in at 2.82 grams. Not the 3.1 grams that would indicated an all copper penny but half way between the 2.5 and 3.1 grams.

What do you think about this one?

Presuming it's a copper-plated zinc planchet (and its appearance is consistent with that identity), the excess weight could be due to the zinc core being punched out of strip that was rolled too thick or it could reflect copper plating that was deposited in too thick a layer.
