CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    An Error Coin and an Error Label !

    I sent in 19 coins to ANACS, which I was hoping to get back prior to a coin show in Richmond, VA. After a run in with Murphy (law) I ended up getting the package at the show.

    When ANACS posted my results as they pre-shipped the coins, I noticed something strange right away about one of the off-center Jefferson Nickels. At that point, I wasn't willing to call them, halt the package shipment and delay the coins coming back to me.

    I opened up the box, and sure enough, they made a slight mistake. I thought it was a pretty neat thing, and I showed the ANACS rep at the Richmond show. He said that ANACS would gladly correct the error for free, should the coin be returned to them.

    One of the local coin club presidents showed up, and I showed him the coin and he suggested that I hold onto it as is - "Its a double error" he said -" how often do you see that ?"

    It is one that will remain in my CONECA errors and die variety display case that I do not intend to sell anything out of. It makes a good conversational piece.

    Mistakes are pervasive among errors slabbed by all the grading services. Hardly pays to collect them as they're so common.

      I think thats pretty neat. I would keep it as it is as well. Guess it could be correct if they would of put the coin in backwards.. : )

        I feel rather silly. It took me a minute to find the error. I take it, it should have said "90% off center"?

          Yes, its supposed to read "90% off center"

          As for the amount of these out there - I agree. There are two reasons I have coins slabbed like this. One, is so a novice, or occasional error collector can look at the coin and read the label if I am busy with another customer.

          It drums some interest at the CONECA Table. There are many non-error collectors that are intrigued by what is in the case, and that sending them in to get graded, it shows the skeptics that they are indeed genuine.

          It's all good, Its about promoting the error collecting arena and I am hoping to do my part.
