It's a stiff collar error. A planchet was fed into the striking chamber a little off-center and was forced into a collar that was frozen in the "up" position by the impact of the hammer die. You almost have a strike clip, as the part of the planchet that was trapped above the collar was almost sheared off. Neat error and a nice demonstration of how elliptical strike clips are created.Mike Diamond. Error coin writer and researcher.
