1987 LMC What is this called? Groove below bust continues.
Can anyone tell me if this has a name and what caused it? The groove under the bust continues along the edge to about 2.5k on the right and lighter to about 9k on the left.

Thank you. My first reaction was that my photo was poor and you were not seeing what I see. I took another at an angle (below). It looked as if the entire area between this crack and the rim was significantly lower than the field around the date. I could not get that to show in this photo either and, upon reexamination, I realized that it was an optical illusion I was seeing. So thank you - yes it is split plating!

It appears like the coin has seen some environmental damage (perhaps acidic in nature) and the plating split after being weakened.Ken Potter
