Its heavily circulated and any wear or damage can make the mintmark look odd.
Its possible. I think they used 2-4 different mint mark punches in the 1944 time frame. let me see if I can find them on Variety Vista.
Here's a link to variety vista of a 1945.....read the fine print of this one, it basically says inverted MM happened more than they originally thought over the years.

You will Find that the 44 S mintmark is the same as the 42 inverted Mintmark. This becomes a population issue....Same goes for 43 S being the same orientation as 42 S(other mms excepted). The 44 S just used what should be considered an "inverted" S based on Normal vs Inverted Orientation for the combined pop of 42 and 43 vs 44 (assuming the original common 42 S was in fact the intended orientation based on timeline, then having to reverse that for 44 be it on purpose or not). *An inverted 43 S has not been discovered, but it may be out there. As well a 44 may be out there too. **I wonder why Variety Vista does not list the inverted s of 42.Last edited by MurrcuryDime; 03-05-2017, 07:21 PM.
