  • 1878 8 Tailfeather Morgan silver dollar

This 1878 Morgan 8 tailfeather has doubling on the reverse including something similar to the VAM-9 "kidney bean" doubling. Although this coin does not show the "kidney bean" touching the small tail feathers next to the body. Ther is extra metal next to the large ending tail feather that looks to be another partial long feather between the inner last long feather on the right side near to the body of the eagle. I did not find any VAM that represents this doubling. This coin is part of a 5 coin set of 1878 Morgans, 7 tail feathers, 8 tail feathers, 7/8 tail feathers, the "S" morgan, and the "CC" 1878 Morgan. Any help would be appreciated.

I seen this when you posted it, I didn't have a firm attribution answer then, and I still don't. = )
The people that typically are on this board are quite busy. They tend to offer support when they can, so an abundance of patience is greatly appreciated.
I am sure they all appreciate you joining the web site and offering your coins for a quick look, so please keep them coming.

I've been busy with a ton of side projects before winter sets in, and I am now just getting back into the groove of showing up here as often as I can.

I'd throw this post over to VAM World and see if they concur with it being doubling.
The 1878-P Morgan has a LOT of VAM's and I am sure people are unwilling to dive into this since they have to wade through 229 VAM's. I took a quick look and I didn't see a VAM match either.

The photo with the close up with the oblong circle showing a potential doubling (the last photo) is also an area that can show die clashes.
To me, from the clarity of the photos provided, this looks like a build up of die chips on the field.
I cannot comment about the tail feathers in general, the photo is simply too blurry to get a good look at the area.

I have the Morgan Dollar Encyclopedia at another location which provides a lot of information, but it would take some time to go through all of the VAM's for this year and pluck out a few possibilities.
ANACS has a grader / attributor that probably could identify if this coin exhibits doubling or if it is simply some sort of machine doubling or otherwise.
For a fee, they would slab the coin and potentially put a VAM number on the coin as well.

Since you have the coin in hand, If you haven't already, check out this site:

Thank you for your reply, Stach. Yeah I know this is a hard one. I briefly looked on the VAM site you listed. It is a 7/5 tail feather but the ones listed do not show this particular anomaly. Cherry pickers does list a VAM 9 that is similar and is described as a kidney bean shape in the same position and is a doubled wing feather variety, but it is a plain 8 tail feather where mine is the 7 over 8 tail feathers and the shape is slightly thinner. I appreciate your input.

Oh my. I guess I got my head placed back on my shoulders and my brain may be working better. I made a huge error. The coin is part of a 5 coin set of 1878 Morgans, consisting of an 8 tail feathers Morgan, a 7 tail feathers Morgan, a 7 over 8 tail feathers Morgan (7/5), a Carson City Morgan and a San Francisco 1878 Morgan. in flipping the holder I made a mistake in which coin was which. It is actually NOT a 7 over 8 tail feathers. It is an 8 tail feathers. The coin in question is actually a VAM9. The key was closely looking at the OBVERSE. The liberty and date are both doubled, as well as four of the stars doubled. Since this does not EXACTLY show as a "kidney bean" would this be a later stage of the variety?

Thank you for posting the VAM site for me. It was a great help.

I was a bit reluctant to put up the VAM world links, as I thought you may have already been down that road. The obverse is used on a lot of the attributions of the Morgan Silver Dollar VAMS. They go all the way to the exact position of the date, whether its is a close date, far date or otherwise. The photos there have been getting better over time, but Its a decent reference if the VAM encyclopedia isn't readily available.

The good thing about that site is it also shows the "I" (interest) and "R" (rarity - 7 being the most rare) ratings. There is a VAM price guide that comes out every once in a while that shows prices particular VAM's have sold for.
