CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

Off hand I would say MDD, however, since the mint mark does have some wear to it, I could be mistaken. Is there any other doubling present around the mint mark?

No - none the only other interesting areas were near the top of the left wing.

The coin is extremely worn and harshly cleaned but that mint mark really caught my attention.

      Thanks

Hi Darryl - That mint mark would also catch my eye. I looked over at our files and we have only one RPM for this date and the coin that you sh yow is not it. Maybe Dr. Wiles will jump in on this one, however, I still have a feeling that it is MDD. Also, now that you do show additional MDD on the left wing and some of the lettering, it only increases the chances that die chatter was the cause of this doubling.

Thanks Wavysteps - I appreciate you taking a look at it - I hope Dr. Wiles comes along and says RPM Regardless - at the end of the day it is what it is.

It is always great to talk to another submariner. I have the SS420, SSBN600, SSBN602 and the SSBN643 to remind me of days gone by. All retired but they were all great boats.

            Regards,
            BJ

              I'll 2nd that - sorry if I broke a rule by posting a non-coin related photo!

Darryl - when it comes to military pride, I'll approve any post or picture. We as veterans deserve that.

Unfortunately, I must concur that it is MDD. It is common on the mintmark on quarters. Apparantly the coin sticks just as it is being ejected giving it a bounce and in this case a double smack against the die producing a triple looking mintmark.

I suppose that most RPM's that exist would more than likely have been found by now . I had a feeling this was going to be the case but REALLLLY appreciate you stopping by and confirming it!
