  • 1972 Kennedy Half Dollar (potential mint clip with incomplete clip)

Good evening, and Happy New Year!

Dr. Wiles pointed me to this forum to ask about this coin, a 1972 Kennedy Half with a minor Mint Curved Clip error. However, I think it is also possible that it has an incomplete clip - would someone knowledgeable like to contribute to my education? Is it a double mint error, how does something like this happen, how common is it, and how much would it be worth in the condition shown?

    Thank you ahead of time.

    Here is the entire coin:

And here are some closeups of the crimp marks, edge, etc:

Not having the coin in hand it is hard to tell but I see no weakness 180 degrees from the clip also known as the Blakesley effect. Also the coin shows marks of the incomplete punch on both sides of the coin. During the blanking process the blank is punched out like one who would use a cookie cutter. the punch curve would only be on a single side of the coin, not on both as show on yours.

I would think this needs to be looked at in hand. I can't explain it, but it has the appearance of a damaged planchet pre strike.

Well the clip looks good. That crimp mask you're talking about might be a rim burr. But I'm not an expert.
