I have a handful of these 1971-D Clad eisenhower dollars with massive doubling on the reverse--many have portions showing heavy doubling on the words, stars, the eagle, and are classic mechanical shelf doubling I was told. I am new to error coins, so, diferentiating between mechanical double dies vs. other double dies, which sell for big money--opinions welcome please.
    Thanks

Your coin does indeed show machine damage doubling (MDD). It is characterized by a flat, shelf-like appearance, which is usually close to the field. The most important characteristic is the absence of split serifs, or furrows at the end of the letters. True hub doubling (doubled dies) will show these splits. Doubled dies also usually show rounded, raised images. The best way to learn the difference is to study pictures of true doubled dies. So, I would suggest you spend some time looking at the photos posted on our die variety web site, www.varietyvista.com.
