CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • 1917 standing liberty

I have a 1917 standing liberty type one that stands out to me as different. What I thought was a talon directly under the eagle's chest on the reverse, under a microscope is actually just a random blob. There is also a blob on the top of one of the stars on the right hand side, and on the wing. I've included photos. Is this a die break or something? I've looked everywhere and can't find another like it.

    Is it raised or recessed?

      They're raised bumps

Can we see the other side?

I think I uploaded it right, But it's normal aside from a tiny raised button by Lady liberty's head.

The blobs you mention on the rev. might be some type of die chips.

Yeah, I think they could be. Like little parts of the die got worn or chipped over time or something. My new question is though, why can't I find any information or images on this "variety"? I've been looking since I acquired the coin back in August, there’s nothing on it. I thought for something as noticeable as this, which can clearly be seen with the naked eye, someone somewhere would've had one reported in the hundred and four years since its production.

I don't know why this one is the only one I can find, it's a beautiful coin and I paid a nice price for it. But I don't want to get my hopes up thinking I have a one of a kind only to find out it's as common as a blade of grass.

It's a very minor (and common) error or anomaly. In my opinion, there would be very little or no added value. The only value is the coin itself. And it's a nice coin.

Well thank you, I'll have to check out your posts to see what interesting treasures you have. I was thinking about getting it graded. Would I have to submit it as a variety or could I just let it be?

Don't bother checking out my posts, I don't have any interesting treasures! LoL!!

You could submit it as a variety or error coin but it will cost you more money. Again, I don't believe you have a significant variety or error here. But keep in mind, I'm not a expert. Maybe other will chime in here.

If you want to submit it, I would just submit it for straight grading... Just my opinion.
