  • 1996-D Penny Volcano on Neck

Odd volcanic shape on lincoln's neck on this 1995-D--coin is a mess, I've never seen corrosion perfect, as this "pimple" is--no entry hole on reverse, so, it's just there--comment welcome!

This action is caused by the zinc swelling inside and breaking thru the copper layer, which was mostly commonly caused buy a trapped gas bubble betweeen the two layers. In time, the zince will oxidizes (turn to a powdery substance) and the hole will enlarge. This type of self destruction was most common on the early to mid 1980 Lincoln cents.
