  • 1974 S 50c Kennedy proof ddo?

Good morning and happy Friday. I came across this 1974 s 50c Kennedy in a mystery box purchased at an auction and need to ask if these are notches that indicate a ddo? Thank you

It could be a minor DDO or glare playing tricks on you. Looks like notching. I would play with the light a little and maybe diffuse it more. See what you come up with

I agree with Klocc. It looks minor if it is a DDO.

I say this because it seems very random. Doubles dies "usually' have a pattern or axis they are orientated to.
Simply look at each one of the locations you point out and see if you can find one common direction these notches are heading.

On IN, the notching is to the NorthWest.
The "7" is to the NorthEast.
The L. B, T and Y seem logical places for notching and might be a DDO, but to me, they typically are not where the doubling is.
The doubling I am used to seeing is normally seen on Kennedy's at IGWT and sometimes on the date.
YES, it does show on LIBERTY as well, but in my opinion, not nearly as much as on IGWT.

There is only one known DDO for the 1974 year and this one does not appear to be it.
You can find it on http://variertyvista.com

NGC lists what they recognize here:

I have a 198x (forget the year) where the Half Dollar exhibits some machine doubling on the coin giving it that notched look, but everything points to mechanical doubling. It is much lower than the original numbers themselves and the metal color is off, its awful shiny vice the typical low brushed like luster on Kennedy's.

Although a different year, the 1964 has plenty of documented doubled dies and can show you a few different ones from mild to wild. The 1964 Kennedy is one of my favorite coins.

Thank you for the informative answers and hope these pics of IGWT help. I looked up the vista example prior and is why I posted question being less than a novice. The subtleties to me being new have me intimidated. Once again my thanks for you time and patients.

It might be a minor DDO, but again I am a little hesitant to call it so I don't see enough on IGWT, but there is a hint on LIBERTY.

Other than http://varietyvista.com, I don't know of a good attribution site for Kennedy's. One other place was changed dramtically and no longer lists varieties, but lists mintage numbers and generic info.

I will offer you a look at one of the 1964 Kennedy DDO's that I use for educational purposes at shows. It's a 1964.
