  • 1982 OMM Penny

    Hello,
New member and novice coin collector. I recently found a 1982 Penny with what I believe to be an OMM. I have not found it on any error lists Can someone please give me their opinion on if its worth having graded? Thank you.

Just my opinion it is post mint damage looks like it took a hit in circulation on the mint mark. From what I can find searching there are no OMM for this date.

In my opinion, this mintmark is simply damaged. With circulated coins things happen all the time to them.

The problem with an OMM is that neither of the mintmarks are of the actual size. This is either a crushed P or D.

The likelihood of this being a OMM is very very low. If varietyvista.com and a few other prominent websites don't mention anything of this, it means it hasn't been found in the past 40 years and now it shows up on a well circulated coin? If it had existed, and is this bold on a circulated coin, if one existed that was uncirculated, you would be able to see it from afar. Dies don't strike just one coin, so others would have surely been found by now.

It's up to you whether you want to send this in and get it attributed, but I believe it will not be validated. CONECA attributers may look at photos and reject seeing it in hand. PCGS and NGC will charge hefty fees to slab this coin and ANACS would charge a little less. But in the end I believe all you would have on the label is a grade, with out any variety designation. The coin would have a better chance at a details grade due to damage than an omm variety.

Thanks for your input, it is very much appreciated. I was hoping it would be a tilted D over D but you are right that there are none in this year. Here's a picture of an actual tilted D over D. The article on mechanical damage was very informative as was another I found there on cleaning coins, rather don't clean them. Thanks again!
