  • Interesting Finds 1987 D

Hello All - I recently found three curious pennies that I'm hoping to get some input on. The first is a 1987 D which has all sorts of strange issues. The overall skin of it has the measles. There are multiple areas of extra material including one that looks like an extra mint mark. Also, a ring around the outside edge that cuts thru the words at the top. What could have happened to this penny?

Looks like the coin suffers from a plating issue. That hole looking thing past TRUST is more than likely a plating issue bubble that erupted, and that is what stained the coin in that area.

As far as IGWT, the issue appears to lay under the letters.
See if the issue exists on the reverse, in respect to the same sort of spacing issue near the rim on the reverse. If so, it might be a very slight off center. If the reverse is OK without issues, the obverse could have a very slight mis-aligned die.

It's tough to see in the picture but you are right - it appears to be slightly off-center obverse and reverse.
