CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

    1906 V Nickel Error

    This is a 1906 V Nickel I’m curious if this would be considered damage or if this is a dye break? I would seem to believe it’s a break seeing the bottom of the E is on top of the upper portion. Could I please get someone’s professional opinion. I greatly appreciate everyone’s time.

    In my opinion, the first thing I would do is get a toothpick or sliver of wood.
    I would check the surface of that letter to see if its gunk that gives you the
    Illusion of it being a cracked letter.

      When you first posted this I could see your view. With Gary’s input I can see his view. Let’s us know what you find.
      I’ve always heard a rose thorn works well.

          I agree with the no scratch theory and suggested maybe another tool in addition to your suggestions, that I have heard from reliable sources, works. I would try whatever tool decided on, on a practice coin or on one that is already hammered should one not want to take first chance on one of the favorites.

            I apologize if I misinterpreted and assumed you were suggesting removal of the gunk or just verifying that there is a raised deposit of debris.
