CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • Die Clashes Lincoln Cents

I have found many dies clashes over the years. If there is a clear clash on only one side of the coin, does that mean that one of the clashed dies might have been changed out before the coin was struck? On Lincoln Shield cents I only see the clash on the obverse. On Lincoln Memorial cents, I can see the clashing on both sides, or just the reverse.

In my opinion, there are literally hundreds of scenarios and each clash type is unique in its own way.
I do not believe there is a cookie cutter reason they happen, other than probably at die setup.
This is where they put in safety margins in between dies so dies wont clash, and unexpectantly shatter.
They do this to set up for a proper strike with the planchets in the test, to try to eliminate the too strong of a strike and too light of a strike as well.

Die clashes are documented on this website:
