  • 1957 penny??

I found this 1957 penny in my Wheat collection. It weighs 2.7g not 3.0 to 3.1 like my others. Also when you do a "drop test" it rings like a bell very bright bronze like. It does not sound like any of the other 1957 penny's I have. Its completely different. Could this be off metal or thin planchet?? Also found a 1955 that is exactly like this 57.

Sometimes a bad alloy may add weight? Just a guess.

fwiw, the mint specs shows 3.110 grams as regular weight with a .130 tolerance, so that is well outside the specs.

first guess, like you said, is rolled thin stock. best to pursue it further to verify.

is there a seam on the edge?
