    2023 Penny Misplaced Designers Initial

Last month dumb luck granted this newbie with a box of pennies containing a large number of these VDBV coins. Mike Diamond examined a few and published his findings in his Collectors Clearinghouse column in Coin World (March 27).
He concluded that it was a misplaced designers initial caused be either a software bug, or a mischievous mint worker. He leans toward a mint worker intentionally punching or carving the extra V into a working hub. Also, all of my VDBV coins and all the other examples I've seen online have the same die gouge on the forehead.

I Would like this discovery to be attributed officially.
What is the process for a new discovery ?

      interesting.

though you've had a professional examine the coin(s). i think the process still will require some more experts to weigh in and even if they do agree, what to do with it is another matter entirely. it really doesn't fit much of anything i've seen except re-engraved dies which really aren't rare.

will be neat to see where this one goes.

Well I've set aside a number of these for examination purposes. A consensus must be reached, and I want to get an example to more experts to reach that consensus. Error-ref has a category of die varieties labeled hidden initials and symbols. If this was done by a mint worker intentionally, I feel it fits that categories definition to a T. I sent some into ANACS with Mikes article and they came back labeled "Obverse Die Erosion VDB V on Shoulder". I'm not too happy about the labeling but without consensus on the cause I understand. And at least it's proven that I'm not in my garage carving these out.

Who should I get examples to to further analyze?

depending on if/how much $$ you want invested into the venture, anacs or icg are probably good places to start.

you've already mentioned names/sites of where to start, so where you go from here is up to you.
