in my opinion, that pitting on the coin is environmental damage - it was exposed to weather, and could have been in the ground.
Or the other side of this is, it was put into some some of bath, chemical or acidic in nature.Gary Kozera

The United States mint has not released many, if any major errors since early 2000. The qa and qc is very good. They pride themselves for doing a great job. That means, very slim pickings out there for major error coins. Good luck with the hunt. The new female based quarters seem to have a few varieties, but again, are short lived since they are generally tied to one working die producing the variety. World coins in general have a boatload of varieties, with most of Europe sporting massive overdates from pre-1600 onward. Errors from India are catching on and rival some of the best major errors on the planet, at a fraction of the cost of what US minted coins could be.Last edited by MintErrors; 04-08-2023, 11:54 PM.Gary Kozera

The mint went to the Schuler press for many denominations in 2002, that's why there are fewer errors after 2001. The Schuler press strikes coins horizontally. The exception is the state quarter program where major errors are available dated after 2001 for acquisition.James Zimmerman
