In my opinion, some tell tale signs some thing has been poorly electroplated, is the rim. If that isn't uniform like the rest of the planchet/coin, it's a sure sign something is wrong.
Second. Know the weight of the coins you are trying to examine. Never. "Assume", breaking that word apart into three separate words may be the end result.
Third, know the years that coins have zinc or steel in them. Its a long shot...extremely long that a planchet from 1943 is going to be hanging around and used 14 or so years later.
Fourth, know that if it was a steel planchet, it would stick to a weak magnet. Remember if it is steel/ iron electroplated, it might stick to the magnet too. Find a 1943 steel cent and do a comparison test on the strengths from each coin.
A bonus is to know that the US Mint did produce planchets and coins for other countries, BUT, this does not look like a potential candidate.
The obverse and reverse of the coin look odd. The coin has that "magicians coin " look to it. On the reverse at the south part of the rim, It looks like some one tried to pry the two pieces apart.
The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was struck right, but it is BELOW this weird looking metal. It's as if they added the obverse piece and realized the hole was not perfect.
it screams post mint, garage coin or someone used a lathe on it to make it become a magicians' coin, or make shift "cold war spy coin".Last edited by MintErrors; 06-18-2023, 02:47 AM.Gary Kozera
