CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

  • 1954-S Washington Quarter---RPM??

    I would appreciate your opinion and any explanation you could give me on the mint mark and area around it. There is a small doubled area on the lower front of the MM that I think is MD. The areas that I am not sure of is the buldge at the bottom of the S, and in the top of the lower loop, and the completely filled top loop. Plus they must have been trying to fix something on the MM due to all the heavy lapping around the MM. Any explanation on this would be appreciated.

    This is similar to what is seen on the 1943 steel wheat cents; it is called die deterioration doubling and in this case it is on the mint mark. It does appear that the die has also ben abraided in that area (medium scrtach lines) and this may have been to remove a clash mark or similar mark.

      I should have known what this doubling was, because I have seen lots of this type of doubling on the date and MM On the 1943 steel cents. Thanks for your reply...
