CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

what leads you to think not be pmd.

i would just confirm one way or the other but i like teachable moments and hearing/reading what someone else's line of thinking may be.

because it looks like it's in the penny? Nothing else on the penny has the same damage.. why just in that area?

why not just in that area?

just because you scrape your knee if you fall, doesn't mean you have scratches on your head, back, feet, elbows etc.

if i scrape a coin below the date, does that damage magically appear also on the rev or must i not also scratch it there also first?

Look at the overall condition of the coin. Then look at some of the damage. Its relatively shiny which means it probably happened not too long ago. The coin show damage in to the coin, like it may have had been exposed to pressure. Digging into the coin, and possibly moving a bit. It could have been a vise coin, but who knows for sure. Rationalize what the die would have looked like IF this struck a coin. Dies don't just strike a single coin. They can last closer to 1 million strikes. That mea s there would be hundreds of thousands of this out there, some in way better shape. Add that the deepest part of the working die (Lincoln himself) would have to have this issue, may cause the die to shatter.

It's tough to look at post mint damage (pmd) and try to figure out what happened. In the end, whether the true reason is found or not, it's still pmd and worthless.
