CONECA (pronounced: CŌ´NECA) is a national numismatic organization devoted to the education of error and variety coin collectors. CONECA focuses on many error and variety specialties, including doubled dies, Repunched mintmarks, multiple errors, clips, double strikes, off-metals and off-centers—just to name a few. In addition to its website, CONECA publishes an educational journal, The Errorscope, which is printed and mailed to members bimonthly. CONECA offers a lending library, examination, listing and attribution services; it holds annual meetings at major conventions (referred to as Errorama) around the country.

CONECA was formed through a merger of CONE and NECA in early 1983. To learn more about the fascinating HISTORY OF THE ERROR HOBBY and THE HISTORY OF CONECA, we encourage you to visit us our main site Here

  • A contium of an error

While looking thru a roll of nickels, I noticed something odd. On many of the 2001-Ps and a few other dates and MMs the portrait of Jefferson has EYELASHES. Compare these first four photos of a 1973-D, 1980-P,1997-D,and a 2001-P,...With the next two photos of a couple of mint set nickels with the normal obverse-- NO EYELASHES, and tell me if you think I have discovered a new variety or a new type of error.

Let me add that since the anomalys occur at two different mints over 8 years (so far) this must be caused by something in the minting process.

The eye lashes are one of the first design elements on the Jefferson nickel to fade, either from die polishing or die deterioration. The difference that you may be seeing is that you are comparing coins that were struck with new dies (EDS) to coins that were struck with older dies (LDS).
