New varieties are occasionally found, but they do not happen that often. In the 1950s through the 1970s it seems like the demand for more coins in the USA rose and the US Mint had its hands full. Some corners may have been cut, and working dies were probably used beyond their scheduled lifetime of stiking coins. Each working die usually can last to about 1 million Lincoln cents before being retired. I have seen quite a few coins that were in the very late die stage,almost looked worn and flat appearance, in uncirculated condition.
