  • why is this nickel dull on one side?

I know it's hard to see from the pictures, but the front has luster but the back is dull and zero luster. I just got this from an unopened mint set, so it's been sitting in the original packaging for 52 years. Was this a result of the contact with the plastic? But why is just one side affected? I did do a search on plating issues but couldn't really find anything pertaining to nickels, except black beauties which this is not. thanks.

In my opinion, it's just a hazy sort of toning. Toning happens, and it has its own set of rules. I do not have an accurate reason as to why only on one side. It could have been due to drastic change in temperature exposure, which side was up, and a whole boatload of other reasons. That's all I got.
